“The question when general election should be held is not for NDP to answer or for it to demand. It is the prerogative of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam to determine if general election is required now or when it should be held”, explained sdra Morshidi responding to a question raised by at a recent NDP get- together session with members in Ukong Tutong.
At the function the NDP member, Awang Bajau asked sdra Morshidi if he would agree that the government should by now reintroduce election considering it already has the biggest and popular political party in the country.
“Honestly, though NDP enjoys the strong support of the people, it is on the other hand not yet ready to see such election system to be put in place now”, answered sdra Morshidi.
“Anyway we should not spend too much energy or focus too much attention on that matter”, he advised.
He said “our priority is to educate ourselves and our members on our style of democracy within the frameworks of our MIB philosophy that takes into account our culture and our Brunei virtuous values”.
“We should be aware that ‘democracy’ is like a double edge sword. It can serve our purpose if properly practiced and can also ruin us if abused, stated sdra Morshidi.
He said NDP was therefore formed as a platform to promote healthy political culture to take place in the country which is now undergoing gradual reformation to its political system.
“The formation of NDP is also in line with the aspiration of His Majesty the Sultan for his subjects to have more says and to participate more actively and effectively in helping to build the nation.
In this context, NDP believes it is the right political platform for the people to help His Majesty realises his aspiration”, said sdra Morshidi.
He said it was also for this reason that NDP is pursuing the efforts to reinforce its organisation structure by establishing as many sub branches of NDP as possible in all villages, mukims and housing areas in the country.
