BRUNEI DARUSSALAM AUGUST 22, 2006: His Majesty the Sutan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam on Monday lamented over what he described as the worrying decline of moral values amid human rapid progress towards modernisation.
He said as more progress is made, the more the decline in religious and moral values and without doubt, Moslems too, stand to witness these worrying trend.
His Majesty therefore stressed the need for the teachings of Isra and Mekraj to be brought to utmost prominence.
These should be deeply embraced, especially in this era when religious and moral values are increasingly being eroded in the wake of modernisation.
He said, “Undoubtedly, the world and the human race have progressed, and that progress is normally measured based on what man creates. Mankind is considered more progressive based on the sophistication of their creations.”
But the monarch added, however, it's seen that the more the people progress, the more values fade. Lives and property that are normally considered sacred seem worthless nowadays. “Just look at the new era warfare, where the strong without any feeling of guilt, drop bombs and shoot missiles on targets that should not be targeted such as homes, public buildings, market places, airports, bridges, highways, |

and evenfarms where people work for their livelihood,” the ruler remarked.
“Aren't these caused by the great advances in the field of weaponry? It seems this progress is victimising civilisation and mankind itself".
He was speaking at the National Isra Mekraj Celebration at the Tutong Civic Centre in Pekan Tutong.
His Majesty urged the people to see what is happening with conscience and full realisation, and to take the perfect guidance provided by Islam.
Isra and Mekraj, His Majesty said, have taught Moslems to persevere and be confident even in the face of the worst of situations. An example of this is the case of Masithah, where such qualities were shown to both Moslems and non-Moslems against whom cruelties were inflicted.
Moslems who are unaffected must sympathise for those who are suffering. Those who have escaped such atrocities, must sympathise with the victims and help them.
This is why I have affirmed to the members of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) that Brunei would give whatever assistance it could to halt the war in Lebanon.
That is why, as a show of sympathy to Muslims else where in the world who have been befallen by calamities, I have consented that special prayers be performed and the Qunut Nazilah supplication read on Fridays.
These would also benefit us, because when we pray for the deliverance of others, the Angels would also pray for our safety.
In the titah, His Majesty went on to point out that a devotion to Allah the Al-Mighty in praying for the well-being of other, Moslems is a noble morality.
But His Majesty lamented such devotion may have been forgotten by many. Teachings of Isra and Mekraj are adequate to make Moslems rich with pious guidance, which are especially needed today.
The weakening souls and piety must be nourished with the teachings of Isra Mekraj. If we're willing to accept and practise those teachings, we could hope for the revitalisation of Muslims and the Islamic civilisation.
Therefore, we should not only read the stories of the Isra Mekraj every year, but more importantly, take them as guidance, the ruler remarked. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei |
