High hope for Brunei to join MAHA 2008

 
 

KUALA LUMPUR 28 NOVEMBER 2006: Brunei may want to send representatives to participate in Malaysian Agriculture Expo MAHA 2008.

This was indicated by several NDP members who are currently in Malaysia to visit the just concluded MAHA 2006 that has attracted over a million visitors since it opened on the 23rd November.

“We hope the relevant authorities would consider Brunei participation in the next MAHA 2008. We believed some Brunei companies would love to join if given the opportunity and the support”, stated Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar and Pengiran Ismail who are among the 42 Brunei delegates at the MAHA 2006.


MAHA 2006 that ended yesterday has successfully showcased new products, technologies, machineries and new innovation in developing agriculture and agro base industry as revenue generating sector in nation building from it 976 booths. 279 booths were taken up by foreign companies from Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, UK, Holland, Canada, China, India, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia.

Brunei did not participate in this year agricultural exposition that has won a place in Malaysia’s Book of Records.

A miss pportunity maybe, but not for some 42 members of National Development Party (NDP) who arrived in Kuala Lumpur from Bandar Seri Begawan last Thursday evening.

They not only visited the Malaysian Agriculture Expo (MAHA 2006) but also took time to visit various factories, farms and cottage-industry establishments in the hope of building up network and learn to establish such business in the sultanate.

Led by Haji Matzain Haji Salleh, the head of Agriculture and Agro-Business Industry, NDP, the delegation were greeted on arrival by NDP Deputy President Mahmud Morshidi Othman at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang.

Several more members in Kuala Belait arrived at the LCCT about an hour later from Miri to be greeted on arrival by the deputy president. The visitors then boarded a luxury bus that will be their official transportation for the duration of their stay in Kuala Lumpur.

They were taken to the house of deputy president in Subang Jaya to enjoy sumptuous dishes, thanks to Warisan Baiduri Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company as a host in cooperation with Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang.

The visitors were then taken to Wira Hotel in Jalan Thombosamy near Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur where they stay for the duration of their stay.

On Friday, the visitors visited the Malaysian Agriculture and Horticulture Agro-Business exhibition (Maha 2006) at Serdang.

While there, the visitors saw various agricultural products at five exhibition halls where they also tried to establish business network with their counterparts from 11 nations that participated in the exhibition.

The visitors also visited various pavilions such as Agrobazaar, Malaysian Truly Asia Kitchen, livestock exhibition, arts and cultural performance, snake show, gardens, and agriculture machinery exhibition.

The livestock exhibition features livestock competition and animal farms such as goat, deer, horse, cows, birds and rabbit.

Two NDP members Pg Haji Abu Bakar Pg DP Hj Mohamad and Pg Hj Ismail were interviewed by Bernama which was telecast Saturday night at Astro.

The two told Bernama that they were really impressed with the exhibition themed Agriculture is Business.

Maha 2006 featured 976 booths including 279 foreign participation from 11 nations including Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, UK, Holland, Canada, China, India, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia.

They were asked why no company from Brunei Darussalam participated at this year’s exhibition, unlike in previous events. They shrugged off the query but indicated that some companies from the sultanate may participate in the next Maha 2008.

Pg Hj Abu Bakar said he was at this exhibition looking for fertilizers towards paddy plantation as some of them may opt for paddy plantation soon.

Pg Hj Ismail meanwhile said he was at the exhibition looking for latest technology in fishing industry as he was involved in the fishery sector.

Some of the visitors made return visit to the exhibition on Sunday as they felt they have not managed to secure business transactions or enquire various new agricultural products.

According to statistics provided by the organiser, about one million visitors attended Maha 2006, far exceeding their target of half a million.

The visitors also visited Putrajaya while in Serdang where they witnessed the magical transformation of the new city as the administrative centre for the Malaysian government.

The RM4billion city was constructed to alleviate overcrowding in Kuala Lumpur so as to spill it to Putrajaya, a city about one-hour drive from the old administrative centre.
